OUR CURRICULUM

Niños del Sol Eco-School focuses on project-based learning in a Montessori-inspired environment which allows students to progress at their own pace. We integrate our academics into our three pillars: earth, community and ocean (ECO). Although, we are an Eco school we have a balanced curriculum. Our students progress quickly and are often above their expected grade level; this is because we allow our students to learn at their own pace. We incorporate real-life applications in all subject areas which gives our students an appreciation for what they have learned. We teach in both English and Spanish in a harmonious bilingual classroom and have a low teacher-to-student ratio, often working one on one with students.

Our program has a strong foundation in math, science, and technology. We believe that our future depends on the balance between nature and industry. We teach students to have compassion for all things living as well as giving them the tools they need to become great problem solvers, placing the required technology directly in their hands. To offer a richer learning experience, we use computers, microscopes, building tools, books, and tactile learning resources. We do not use printed workbooks and avoid cookie-cutter methods of education. Our goal is to instill enjoyment in learning. Once that spark has been lit, there is no putting out the flame.

Below you will find a list of courses. A session block is 40 minutes of instruction and the number of sessions in our curriculum is congruent with MEP expectation. These blocks vary slightly throughout the year depending on school projects such as the Grades of Green Challenge (which requires more time in the garden classroom). Ocean classes have been lengthened this year and are two session blocks.

What is project-based learning?

Project Based Learning is a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to an authentic, engaging, and complex question, problem, or challenge.

What is the Montessori Method?

Montessori is a method of education that is based on self-directed activity, hands-on learning and collaborative play. In Montessori classrooms, children make creative choices in their learning, while the classroom and the teacher offer age-appropriate activities to guide the process.
